A Look at the Efforts of the Bill Gates Charity

The Bill Gates Charity, also known as Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was created in the year 2000 by Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda. The Bill Gates Charity aims to help the poor and disadvantaged by providing heath care, better access to technology and opportunities for education.

The Bill Gates Charity is based in Seattle, Washington and is headed by CEO Patty Stonesifer and chaired by both Bill and Melinda Gates and Bill Gates’ father, William Gates, Sr.

One of the chief missions of the Bill Gates Charity is to improve health care and save lives, most especially in developing countries that are desperate for help. The foundation brings to these poverty and disease stricken areas the medicines and tools needed for treatment. In addition, the Bill Gates Charity funds research into development of vaccines and drugs to fight different diseases. Some of its priorities under its Global Health Program are the prevention and treatment of diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, immunization, nutrition, and reproductive health. The Bill Gates Charity also supports advocacy efforts to create awareness about global health issues.

Under its US Education program, The Bill Gates Charity aims to improve the country’s education system and, therefore, increase the graduation rate in high schools nationwide and prepare students for college education and future employment. As part of its effort in education system reform, The Bill Gates Charity sponsors research into this area. The foundation also provides scholarship grants to outstanding students who may not have the financial capability to further their education.

Another primary goal of the Bill Gates Charity is to provide access to technology and information, especially to poor communities. To accomplish this, the Bill Gates Charity established its Global Libraries Program which has initiatives in the US and around the world. Under its US Library Program, the Bill Gates Charity sets up computers and internet access in public libraries in towns and cities all over US. In addition to infrastructure, the library staff also receives training as well as technical service and support. The foundation is applying the same initiatives overseas with the help of its global partners. The Bill Gates Charity International Library Initiatives brings Internet technology to the poorest countries and also aid in the re-construction of public libraries.

The Bill Gates Charity has provided grants towards charitable efforts all across the United States and in over 100 countries, totaling $10.5 billion in grant commitments since it started.
